Pulmonologist analyzes the current situation between flu and dengue viruses
Brazilians have no peace, and 2024 has started off busy here regarding the viruses affecting the population.
After the Covid-19 pandemic, the dengue mosquito - which was hovering in the air - has come on strong and has been affecting thousands of Brazilians and residents of Espírito Santo, with cases on the rise this month. Amidst the situation, autumn has arrived, the flu vaccination has begun, and many patients have been wondering: when can I get vaccinated against the flu after having dengue? According to pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist, Jessica Polese, these are two distinct viruses and it depends on the situation, how the symptoms were, etc. "If a person has contracted dengue, they should wait until they have fully recovered before receiving the flu vaccine. The waiting time may vary depending on the severity of the illness. Generally, it is advisable to wait a few weeks after complete recovery, or 30 days is a reasonable time, but I reiterate: the doctor attending to the patient, if there are any sequelae, will indicate the right timeframe," the doctor explains.
The dengue virus is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, while the flu is caused by the influenza virus. Regarding the vaccines, the doctor explains that the vaccines for flu, Covid-19, and dengue are interchangeable, meaning they can be administered on the same day. The flu medication is an inactivated immunizer. The Covid-19 vaccine is messenger RNA. Finally, the dengue vaccine is attenuated, using live viruses, so there is no interference in the immune response between the doses," she explains.
Jessica emphasizes that hydration is extremely important concerning dengue and flu, and to take the medications recommended by doctors. "Regarding the flu, keep an eye on the vaccination schedule, and do not skip getting vaccinated, as we are already experiencing milder temperatures, and the vaccine combats the virus and prevents contamination of others," the doctor informs.
