Work meetings, leisure time on social media, online meetings with friends, daily reminders, alarms—the cell phone has become an indispensable accessory in human life.
However, know that being connected all the time to it is very harmful. Among some health problems we can list are: skin spots—due to the blue light emitted by the device; insomnia caused by the same light that keeps us alert; injuries to hands, fingers, and neck, from the time spent using the device, which can cause various types of repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and even expression wrinkles.
The sleep medicine specialist and president of the Brazilian Sleep Association Regional ES, Jéssica Polese, explains that the ideal is to stop using the device two hours before going to sleep. “The light emitted by the cell phone alerts the brain to stay alert, even when there are automatic settings that reduce this light at a certain time, it still affects, especially because people tend to use the cell phone already in bed, and this disrupts sleep a lot,” explains the specialist. “The ideal is to prepare the environment for bedtime, with a darker setting, appropriate temperature, the moment is to relax,” she states.
Regarding the spots caused by the light emitted from the cell phone, dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), Karina Mazzini, explains: “This type of light increases the production of melanogenesis - melanin synthesis - and can cause skin spots, in addition to contributing to aging, with the degradation of skin enzymes,” she states. Any type of electronic device can cause this damage, the ideal is to avoid them at bedtime, emphasizes the dermatologist.
Dermatologist Irene Baldi warns that wrinkles and lines on the neck are also another problem due to cell phone use. “The position used when looking at the cell phone causes many wrinkles in this neck region and lines on the chest with the movement,” highlights Irene. Regarding the light emitted by the device, Irene recommends using sunscreen to prevent skin damage.
Along with the sleep problem, endocrinologist Gisele Lorenzoni warns that “not sleeping well, between 6 to 8 hours, and not having a sleep routine causes various diseases such as: Diabetes; Obesity; High Blood Pressure; and Arrhythmia,” she explains. In other words, the light from the cell phone that keeps you alert is only harmful!
