Summer Also Brings Risks of Respiratory Diseases

In the hottest season of the year, respiratory diseases also strike. The high and sudden temperature changes, dry weather, increased use of air conditioning, and rising rainfall contribute to the increase in cases of asthma, rhinitis, bronchitis, and sinusitis.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that the ideal relative humidity (RH) index is around 40% to 60%, and on some days in summer, it can drop below 20%.

Air conditioning is one of the major villains of respiratory health during this period, according to pulmonologist Jessica Polese. “Temperature variations increase the likelihood of bronchial inflammation, and the device dries out the protective mucus, making the airways more vulnerable. That’s why I recommend my patients rinse their nostrils with saline solution. It’s very important to keep the body hydrated, drinking at least two liters of water a day,” says the specialist.

Another problem related to air conditioning is the lack of proper cleaning, which favors the proliferation of dust mites, fungi, and bacteria. The same happens in vacation homes, common during trips, but which remain closed for long periods, accumulating dust, mold, and mites. “These conditions favor allergic rhinitis crises, so it’s ideal to clean the place beforehand,” advises the doctor. Bed and bath linens should be washed, and if possible, it’s recommended to leave mattresses and pillows in the sun.

As the season is one of the rainiest of the year, excessive humidity can promote the appearance of mold on walls and cabinets. “Mold exacerbates asthma cases, and recurrent contact with mold spots can even cause infections. Children and the elderly are even more susceptible to the disease and need extra care,” says Jessica Polese.
