Who doesn't want to arrive in summer with smooth legs free of those dark veins that appear and discomfort many people? Well, there is a solution; there is still time to treat them for summer, and there are various types of treatments with indications that vary according to each case.

Varicose veins are dilated and twisted veins that become visible because they are not properly conducting blood. They affect about 40% of the population, with a higher incidence in women.

According to vascular surgeon Marcelo Quintão, the main cause is family history. He also explained why women suffer more from the problem, and the answer lies in female hormones, which are consequently among the main causes for the emergence of the issue.

“There are also environmental factors, such as not engaging in physical activities, being above the ideal weight, jobs that require a person to stand for long periods or lift heavy weights, and jobs that require a person to sit for long periods also influence the emergence of these varicose veins,” he explained.

Varicose veins not only cause aesthetic discomfort; they can generate a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs, as well as pain, cramps, tingling, and swelling, especially at the end of the day.

Marcelo explained that today’s treatments are very modern, and there is less and less need for surgical intervention, as there are options with very advanced technologies that make life easier for patients when it comes to recovering daily activities.

Eliminating varicose veins also involves clinical treatment with medication, the use of elastic stockings, physical activity, and creams for the legs. Today, we have endolaser available, considered a minimally invasive treatment, with no cuts and a quick recovery.

“Regarding summer, there is still time to treat them. Technology has developed so much that even surgical techniques allow patients to be discharged quickly, averaging seven days until full recovery. Techniques with guided foam and transverse laser have almost immediate recovery, and we can treat patients from young people to older individuals, and these techniques have avoided the need to take patients to the surgical center, which is a significant advantage,” reported the surgeon.

To prevent the emergence of varicose veins, it is important to include a routine of physical activity, use of stockings, weight control, use of medications to reduce circulation problems that cause pain and swelling, and maintain a balanced diet.

New Techniques:

  1. Endolaser
    Endolaser is a minimally invasive technique that allows the treatment of patients with varicose veins who have alterations in the saphenous vein. This methodology replaces the conventional technique, focused on the surgical removal of this vein, in selected cases.
  2. Guided Foam
    Guided Foam also replaces conventional varicose vein surgery in some patients, especially in advanced cases. The technique involves injections of appropriate foam into the affected veins, with the aid of vascular ultrasound, causing chemical destruction of the varicose veins or the diseased saphenous vein. It can be performed in the office, without the need for hospitalization;
  3. Transdermal Laser
    Transdermal Laser is used for the treatment of what are called spider veins, that is, small veins less than three millimeters. Direct shots are made on the spider veins through the handpiece, a type of manual gun connected to a specific Transdermal Laser equipment suitable for this method.
  4. Conventional Varicose Vein Micro-surgery
    Frequently recommended by doctors, Conventional Varicose Vein Micro-surgery is still considered an excellent treatment. It can even be associated with Foam to achieve more effective results – but this can vary according to each patient and also depends on the evaluation made by the specialist.

These are some of the various treatments available to both cure problems caused by varicose veins and assist in their aesthetic disappearance. Each case is unique, and the technique to be used is diagnosed by the vascular doctor.
