The importance of investing in knowledge has always been a consensus among everyone. However, at this moment when unemployment rates have risen due to the current economic crisis in the country, the appreciation of study and the choice of new paths for professionalization is even more necessary. With this in mind, Vila Velha University (UVV) launches this semester a new semi-presential course in Optics and Optometry. This technological degree works with the application of specific techniques to identify visual acuity problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Unlike the ophthalmologist, who treats eye and vision diseases, the optometrist is the primary vision care professional. They conduct evaluation exams and detect visual disorders and their causes, then refer the patient to a specialist doctor. The course is aimed at professionals working in optical stores, in eyeglass assembly laboratories, in clinics, offices, optometric and ophthalmological centers, representatives of companies in the optical field (frames) and contact lenses, as well as other interested parties who wish to enter or are already in this field. According to the professor of Optics and Optometry, Janaína Simões, the student will have the opportunity to study all theoretical content in the virtual environment of UVV ON and also get hands-on experience in practical classes, weekly, on the institution's campus in Vila Velha. “The course trains students to assess refractive and sensory anomalies through non-invasive and non-medicated means, detecting dysfunctions related to visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, binocular vision, visual field, stereoscopic vision, and color vision. In addition to managing the adaptation of contact lenses, filters, prismatic lenses, as well as non-invasive and non-medicated therapeutic procedures,” explains. Job market The Optics and Optometry course at UVV ON is currently the only one available in Espírito Santo. Graduated students will find a market full of opportunities, as there is a shortage of specialized professionals to meet the basic and preventive assistance needs of the Brazilian population. The activities of this professional can be carried out in different locations dedicated to visual health, in addition to ocular orthoses and prostheses, such as in offices, health posts, schools, universities, and in the retail commercial sector, such as optical stores.
