Ultrasound is an imaging exam that allows observation of structures through high-frequency waves, which echo and, in response, form real-time images. It is common to use this type of exam to see the functioning of organs such as the heart, liver, lungs, uterus... but can the largest organ of the human body, the skin, benefit from this type of exam?

In the skin, ultrasound can examine its layers, as well as blood vessels. It is possible to study tumors and skin lesions throughout the body, allowing for the measurement of skin thickness.

According to dermatologist Karina Mazzini, ultrasound can help in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of skin lesions. "We can, for example, differentiate the composition of the lesion and know the exact location according to the layers of the skin. With a purely clinical analysis, these lesions could be mistakenly confused and misinterpreted," says the doctor.

Another application is in identifying different skin cancers. "Ultrasound indicates whether we are dealing with a more or less aggressive tumor and the thickness of the lesion, in addition to contributing to the planning of the removal surgery, as the doctor will know precisely the area to be treated," affirms Karina.

Moreover, the exam also facilitates monitoring post-surgery. Karina explains that ultrasound allows for a "reading of the skin" that acts as a right-hand tool for dermatologists both to identify diseases and to assist in aesthetic procedures. "Ultrasound allows for the verification of the differentiation of some types of skin fillers, such as hyaluronic acid," adds Karina.

The technology of ultrasound waves has also reached equipment that aids in the pursuit of beauty. "In dermatology, we also have another type of ultrasound, which is micro and macro focused. This helps reduce sagging and localized fat and combat the effects of aging on the body and face," she explains.

Dermatologist Irene Baldi explains that Micro and Macro Focused ultrasound treatments were developed to provide a lifting effect in a non-invasive and non-surgical way. "This technology uses heat to promote an improvement in sagging; the waves can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and thus map the structure where treatment is needed," explains the dermatologist.

Micro focused ultrasound is used to treat small areas such as the face and neck, while macro, as the name suggests, is for larger regions, such as arms, abdomen, etc. We often use this treatment with biostimulators that further enhance the desired result, highlights Irene.
