Transsexuality is a condition in which an individual identifies with a gender different from the sex assigned to them at birth. Today, plastic surgery plays an important role in this transition process, thanks to sex reassignment surgeries (or gender transition surgery).
According to plastic surgeon and member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), Humberto Pinto, there is a growing accessibility and demand for surgical procedures that help align the gender expression of trans individuals.
“Every day we can integrate these people with more self-confidence, dignity, and belonging. The steps in plastic surgery for gender alignment can vary depending on the type of surgery and the specific needs of the patient, but generally include the following steps: Evaluation and diagnosis, hormonal therapy, pre-operative preparation, surgery, and post-operative recovery,” explains the doctor.
Among the surgical options, we have the following: mastectomy, intimate surgeries, and feminization surgeries.
Mastectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove breast tissue and provide a more masculine appearance. According to Humberto, in addition to breast removal with mastectomy, many feminization surgeries are performed, such as the placement of implants and others. “We perform surgeries on the face, with a visual transformation in which we give the face feminine traits. The surgery can be a set, according to each person's desire; we can perform procedures on the nose, mouth, cheekbones, etc.,” points out the surgeon.
Dr. Humberto has also been performing sex reassignment surgeries for many years, and according to him, there have been more than 60 surgeries performed here in the state.
Sex reassignment is nothing more than a change of sex, and we perform it on both trans men and women. “Reassignment consists of reconstructing the penis in place of the vagina or amputating the penis to construct the vagina,” he explains.
According to the plastic surgeon, these are delicate surgeries, and patients receive psychological support and all the assistance before and after the procedure. “The satisfaction of these people is evident after the surgeries, and for us, the feeling is also uplifting,” affirms the doctor.
In summary, in the current medical universe, there is greater awareness and facilities for gender diversity, which has driven advances in intimate surgery and body harmonization for transgender individuals.
