You may have heard of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, right? And what about Hashimoto's thyroiditis? This unusual term has been discussed more after actress Cleo Pires declared on her social media that she suffers from the disease.

But what is Hashimoto's thyroiditis? According to endocrinologist Gisele Lorenzoni, this is an autoimmune disease that attacks and inflames the thyroid.

"The thyroid is a gland located in the front of the neck. Its function is to produce hormones that regulate much of the functioning of the body's cells. In Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the body produces antibodies against the thyroid cells. These antibodies cause the destruction of the gland or reduce its activity," she explained.

The actress described feeling weak, lacking energy, experiencing body pain, and being unable to do anything when the disease strikes. According to the doctor, the causes are not well defined, but it may be triggered by a genetic or environmental factor (stress, an accident, major surgery). It affects more women than men, and its prevalence increases as people age.

"There is no cure, but it can be controlled with medication. The diagnosis is made through blood tests that assess hormones, enlargement of the thyroid gland, slow reflexes, and anemia, among other factors," concluded Gisele.
