It is noticeable that the Capixaba beer universe is attentive to its responsibility towards nature. Convento Cervejaria, MeuChope.com, and Reserva do Gerente have initiatives that make a difference and are part of the circular economy.
In an unprecedented partnership in the state, Convento Cervejaria joined forces with a manufacturer of equipment and solutions for craft beer systems to develop equipment that can generate more operational efficiency using fewer inputs. According to one of the brewery's partners, Léo Leal, this is how they created a HopGun, which aims to improve the performance of hops, reducing the need for excessive amounts of this flower for extracting aromas and flavors. "Less is really more with this technology," he emphasizes.
Another important action is the donation of barley malt spent grain to feed the dairy cows at Fazenda Itaiobaia, in Serra. "We could have chosen another type of disposal, but we are concerned about sustainability and the production chain. This seemed to be the best way to finalize one of the production stages," says the entrepreneur.
MeuChope.com, founded by partners Augusto Sato and Bruno Medeiros, is associating an improvement in the use of natural resources in their company through the Circular Economy. The beers available in their self-service machines can be purchased in larger quantities in 'growler pets', the brewery's big bet. "We are not held hostage by cans and bottles monopolized by the large beer industry," explains one of the partners, Augusto Sato. According to the entrepreneur, the growler is made of plastic and holds one liter of beer, and once opened, it is ideal for consumption within seven days. "We provide the bottle for free, and with high turnover, we pay attention to sustainability and have a collection point for both plastic cups and growlers, precisely to carry out this waste reservation process." Waste collection is done 24 hours a day at the company's address at Av. Desembargador Lyrio, 390 - Mata da Praia, Vitória.
Convento also collects its plastic growlers from its consumers' homes and turns what would be discarded in the trash into recyclable material in the plastic chain. In partnership with Mayfredo Embalagens, all growlers return to the system, becoming new polymers and transforming back into plastic materials. "As if that weren't enough, we also donate all the plastic barrels used to be transformed into bottle cap collectors to help the NGO 'viralataviraluxo', which defends and protects street dogs," explains Léo.
Reserva do Gerente opted to use so-called "green energy" to produce its craft beer. The company has two solar power plants that generate 17 thousand kilowatts. "We use this electricity to produce not only our beer but also gin, cachaça, and to keep our entertainment space running," explained owner Ademar Belizário.
