With some states in the country beginning to control the Coronavirus pandemic and stabilize cases, many questions still linger about this virus that remains so mysterious in the medical universe. Pulmonologist Jessica Polese warns about the studies that should continue and the treatments that will be indicated for patients who have already had the disease. “Among patients who had Covid-19, many presented mild cases and others more severe syndromes where, in addition to the lungs, other organs were affected. There are reports of cardiac issues, kidney failure, and even blood coagulation deficiencies,” explains the pulmonologist.

Regarding pneumonia, we see that the Coronavirus caused severe lung damage, and the patient will need to be monitored for some time, even after the disease, for their recovery. “As the Coronavirus causes inflammation in the bronchi, lungs, and pulmonary alveoli, due to the drop in blood oxygenation, the body compensated by increasing the respiratory rate with the already affected lungs, hence the shortness of breath that many experienced,” explains the doctor.

“Many patients complain that this shortness of breath continues, some have experienced impaired smell, and others have lost their sense of taste. Thus, we have found that this sensory region linked to the respiratory system has suffered sequelae,” says Jessica. According to research from a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, in an article published on the Veja magazine website, it shows that patients take weeks to achieve complete recovery and that people aged 50 and older generally have some persistent sequelae. Ongoing problems include fatigue, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, joint pain, mental confusion, persistent loss of smell, and damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain.
