No trauma with "bat ears"

A cause of trauma due to appearance and potential bullying, especially among children and teenagers, prominent or protruding ears can be corrected through a simple surgery called otoplasty. Recently, actress Isa Scherer, 24, daughter of Fernando Scherer, known as Xuxa, revealed on her social media that she underwent otoplasty in childhood. "I had surgery on my ears, which were protruding, at the age of seven. Seven!" said the daughter of the former Brazilian swimmer.

According to plastic surgeon Fabricio Regiani, this type of procedure can be performed from the age of six. "This is the moment when children usually start to feel more uncomfortable with their prominent ears. Additionally, most of the ear growth has already occurred by this age, so the surgery will not interfere with this process. However, the most important condition for successfully performing this surgery is that the child wants to undergo the change," he emphasizes.

This is exactly what happened with Isa Scherer, as she shared in her Instagram stories after a follower asked about her cosmetic procedures. "I would come home from school crying every day because they called me Dumbo. Then, I would ask to have the surgery every day from my family," she recounted.

After the surgery – which takes about an hour and a half – the patient wears a bandage for the first 24 hours secured by an elastic band around the head. After removing it, it is important to continuously wear the band (day and night) for 30 to 40 days, and then it is recommended to wear it at night for another 3 months. "The stitches are behind the ear and do not need to be removed, as they are absorbed by the body. This period when children are at home due to the pandemic may be suitable for undergoing the procedure," he suggests.
