Heitor Spagnol, coordinator of the Medical Clinic at São Bernardo Apart Hospital (SBAH), explains that the suspension of follow-up can harm the effectiveness of treatments The 21st COVID-19 Risk Map released by the State Health Department (Sesa) shows that Espírito Santo has 28 cities at Low Risk of COVID-19 contamination and another 48 at Moderate Risk. The stabilization of the pandemic and the advancement of vaccine development research are leading people to gradually return to activities, including health care and routine exams. Heitor Spagnol, coordinator of the Medical Clinic at São Bernardo Apart Hospital (SBAH), emphasizes the importance of keeping up with routine screening and laboratory tests and medical treatments. "These tests aim to detect some diseases early and thus define a more immediate and early treatment to avoid a late diagnosis, which can hinder therapeutic approaches," he explains, citing examples of screening tests such as mammograms and colonoscopies. "In addition to these, the interruption of oncological treatments can affect the effectiveness of chemotherapy and cause the disease to progress, bringing greater complications to the patient. At the beginning of the pandemic, telemedicine helped a lot, but physical examination and outpatient care are essential for us to assess how the patient is really doing," comments the doctor. When it comes to laboratory tests that need to be monitored, it is also worth highlighting hormonal control tests such as thyroid treatments and those that depend on results to adjust therapeutic doses like anticoagulant control, pre-operative tests for surgeries that cannot be postponed, as well as those that are part of prenatal care. Laboratory Thinking about this return to health care routines safely, São Bernardo Saúde has expanded its laboratory located at São Bernardo Apart Hospital (SBAH), with an enlarged reception and individualized spaces for sample collection. "These changes help to avoid crowding and maintain the recommended distance with comfort and safety. In addition, we have installed a drive-thru for sample collection in Linhares and the Center of Colatina with scheduled hours and test results sent via WhatsApp to avoid patients having to go to the hospital and reduce the risk of COVID-19 contamination," highlights the Administrative Director of SBAH, Leonan Tofoli.
