Heart Risks in Winter

Endocrinologist warns about moderate exercise for at-risk populations Studies by the American Heart Association reveal that during winter, the incidence of heart attacks increases by up to 25%, mainly due to colder days, and one of the reasons is that the body works harder to keep warm. According to endocrinologist and sports medicine specialist Gisele Lorenzoni, what happens is that "due to low temperatures, there is a need for adaptations in the cardiovascular system that works harder to maintain its balance, and when the nerve endings in the skin feel the cold, our metabolism prepares to prevent heat loss," explains the doctor. Thus, the doctor warns about the practice of physical exercises in a moderate way for at-risk populations. "The elderly, obese, hypertensive, and sedentary individuals should exercise, yes, but in a moderate way, as research shows an increased risk of heart attack in this population during winter, due to vasoconstriction, which decreases blood flow to the brain and heart, the body's vital organs," she emphasizes. For those who are accustomed to exercising and are outside this risk group, the ideal is to maintain exercise and a good diet. "Many stop exercising in winter and consume more calorie-dense foods because of the body heat they provide, but attention to food is necessary. Avoid pasta, and opt for soups or vegetable broths," Gisele states. "And keep up with physical activity, always dressing warmly to avoid thermal shock depending on what is practiced," she highlights.
