Summer is approaching, and the topic of sun protection is coming to the forefront. Daily use of sunscreen is a unanimous recommendation among doctors in general. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, present even on cloudy days, is one of the main causes of premature aging, skin spots, and cancer. Doctor Renata Melo explains that sunscreen should be a fundamental part of skincare for anyone, in any season of the year.
“Ultraviolet radiation is present every day, regardless of the weather, and the habit of applying sunscreen daily is essential to protect the skin from the harmful effects of sun exposure,” says Renata.
And about the best sunscreen, which one to choose? Renata says it should meet the needs of each skin type. For oily skin, she recommends dry-touch formulas. For dry skin, products with higher hydration. In addition, it is important to consider the ideal sun protection factor (SPF).
“In daily life, an SPF of 30 is sufficient for those who will not be directly exposed to the sun. However, for fairer skin or in situations of high sun exposure, it is important to consider a higher SPF,” she points out.
Although SPF offers an idea of the level of protection, the doctor emphasizes that it does not guarantee absolute protection: “An SPF of 100 does not mean 100% protection, but rather a broader protection. Still, it is essential to apply the right amount and when at the beach or pools, always reapply the sunscreen after swimming,” she highlights.
In addition to external sun exposure, the daily work routine for those who deal with screens, in particular, must be noted. “The increasing exposure to computers and electronic devices and artificial light can worsen spots and accelerate skin aging, so it is very important to use sunscreen for prevention and protection of healthy skin,” she states.
