With the arrival of summer, it is essential to pay attention to sun protection. Daily use of sunscreen is indispensable, as ultraviolet (UV) radiation — present even on cloudy days — is one of the main factors related to premature aging, the appearance of spots, and skin cancer.
Dr. Renata Melo emphasizes that sunscreen should be part of the skincare routine at all stages of life and at any time of the year. “Ultraviolet radiation acts daily on the skin, regardless of weather conditions. Therefore, creating the habit of applying sunscreen every day is essential to minimize the damage caused by the sun,” explains Renata.
Dermatologist Karina Mazzini warns that sun protection goes beyond aesthetics and should be seen as a continuous health care measure. “Sunscreen is one of the most important assets in preventive dermatology. It protects the DNA of skin cells, reduces silent inflammatory processes, and helps keep the skin healthier and more balanced over time,” she explains.
But how to choose the ideal sunscreen? According to the doctor, the best option is one that respects the needs of each skin type. For those with oily skin, formulas with a dry touch are most indicated. Dry skin benefits from products with greater moisturizing power. Another essential point is the appropriate choice of sun protection factor (SPF). “In everyday life, an SPF 30 is usually sufficient for people who will not have direct sun exposure. However, those with fairer skin or who will be in the sun for longer should opt for a higher SPF,” she advises. Renata also points out that SPF does not represent total protection. “An SPF 100 does not mean complete protection, but rather a higher level of coverage. Still, it is essential to apply the correct amount and reapply the product whenever there is contact with water, such as at beaches or pools,” she highlights.
According to Karina, there is no single perfect sunscreen, but rather the most suitable one for each routine. “The best sunscreen is the one that the patient can use every day, in the correct amount and with reapplication. Texture, comfort, and adaptation to the routine make all the difference for continuous use,” the doctor emphasizes.
The specialist also reminds us that sun protection should be considered globally. “It is no use using a good sunscreen only on the face and neglecting areas like the neck, décolletage, and hands, which also suffer from radiation and reveal skin aging,” warns Karina.
In addition to sun exposure, Dr. Renata warns about another increasingly present factor in daily life: excessive screen time. “Constant exposure to light emitted by computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices can intensify spots and accelerate skin aging. Therefore, sunscreen is also an important ally in daily protection, even indoors,” she concludes.
Karina adds that today, sun protection is indispensable even outside the external environment. “The skin is daily exposed to visible radiation and blue light from screens, which contribute to spots and texture changes. Daily use of sunscreen is one of the most effective ways to preserve skin quality in the long term.”
