Physical exercise is recommended to prevent various diseases, benefits physical and mental health, and a new study highlights that exercise is good for sexual health.
The study - published in the journal The Journal of Sexual Medicine - found that men with a large waist circumference or high BMI were 50% more likely to experience erectile dysfunction, while approximately half of obese women reported issues with sexual activity, desire, and performance at least some of the time.
The study also showed that women who exercised up to six hours a week reported lower sexual distress and less resistance in their clitoral arteries compared to women who did not exercise. Those who engaged in physical activities also showed significantly higher levels of desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm.
According to endocrinologist and Sports Medicine Specialist, Gisele Lorenzoni, it is clear that being fit aids sexual health. “From the moment a person engages in some physical activity, they are taking care of themselves, and among most who dedicate themselves to exercise, the diet is healthy, in addition to all regular care, such as monitoring rates, among others, and consequently, sexual life tends to be better in this clinical aspect,” explains the doctor.
We know that exercising reduces stress, anxiety, and automatically cases of depression, and thus the body reacts well.
“Regarding sexual health, physical exercise has several positive factors such as increased blood circulation, which benefits the sexual organs; your muscle endurance increases; you become motivated and more confident, with your self-esteem elevated for doing good for yourself,” points out Gisele.
