Pandemic Causes Increase in Melasma

After completing a year since the emergence of Covid-19, which has already caused numerous deaths in Brazil and around the world, health care has been one of the most debated factors in combating the virus, including the importance of a good diet and preserving immunity. One of the suggestions from various specialists was sun exposure for Vitamin D absorption. “As there was social isolation, many people stopped going outside, exercising outdoors, so there were cases of decreased natural absorption of this vitamin,” highlights dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology Karina Mazzini.

With the concern in combating the disease and in search of immunity, there was an increase in sun exposure, even among those who were indoors and those who gradually returned to their routine. With this 'intentional' exposure, melasma – skin hyperpigmentation – saw a significant increase. “We noticed an increase of more than 60% in the demand for melasma treatment,” says Karina. “What happened was a search for the benefits of sunlight for health, which, without proper care, ended up becoming another problem,” she explains.

According to the dermatologist, melasma is characterized by the appearance of darker spots, commonly on the face and neck area. “Melasma has no cure, and one of the triggering factors is exposure to ultraviolet rays,” she states. “The greater the exposure, the greater the protection needed, including reapplication of sunscreen and the use of physical filters, such as hats, shirts, etc.,” she emphasizes.

The treatments indicated for melasma range from lasers, such as pico seconds and the 1064 nm Laser, which renew skin cells and help reduce spots, to more advanced technology treatments like Digital Microneedling, which is done with a device that injects the active ingredient directly into the skin. “In transdermal infusion, we will inject the lightener directly into the spot, in the deeper layer of the skin, offering the opportunity for a more effective result,” says the dermatologist. Karina emphasizes that in addition to treatments, it is very important to take care of the skin on a daily basis, always remembering to use sunscreen and moisturize.
