At the beginning of August, the controversial decision by the mayor of Itajaí (SC), Volnei Morastoni, to use ozone-based treatment for Covid-19 patients hospitalized in the city's SUS sparked much debate, with some against and others in favor. For biomedical professional Juliana Pedrosa Sarmento and naturalist hair therapist Paula Breder, who have just opened a clinic specializing in Ozone Therapy treatment in Vila Velha, the treatment is experimental but has helped various patients. “In June, the Brazilian Association of Ozone Therapy (Aboz) obtained authorization from Conep (National Council of Ethics in Research) to lead studies with ozone, one in outpatient patients and another in patients already hospitalized with Covid-19,” explains Paula Breder. “The conclusion was that the rectal insufflation version was less costly than the intravenous one,” adds Paula.
According to biomedical professional Juliana Pedrosa Sarmento, there are several studies from countries like Germany, Italy, and Spain where the treatment has been used and yielded results. “In Italy, the Scientific Society of Oxygen and Ozone Therapy (SIOOT) published research on April 24 showing various factors of the treatment, such as normalization of heart rate, improvement of body temperature, normalization of kidney function, among others. In countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, and even Russia, Ozone Therapy has been used for over half a century,” explains Juliana.
The treatment indicated by the mayor is the one that has the most efficacy according to published studies. “Rectal insufflation is safe and effective, as our intestines are one of the most important organs in the body and responsible for most of the absorption of nutrients, water, vitamins, etc. Therefore, the results obtained will show effectiveness,” emphasizes the biomedical professional.
For naturalist hair therapist Paula Breder, it is a matter of public knowledge. “When people discover the therapeutic potential of Ozone Therapy, they should be grateful to be receiving this treatment,” she emphasizes.
The clinic of the partners, PB Saúde Integrada, began operations on the 10th and offers treatments in integrative practice, aesthetics such as body and hair treatments, in addition to treatments for infectious, inflammatory, and degenerative diseases.
