On World Cancer Day, celebrated on February 4, health professionals are joining efforts to raise awareness about the close link between excess body fat and the development of cancer. Doctors warn that obesity is not just an aesthetic concern, but a significant risk factor for various types of cancer.
"Obesity has been associated with a substantial increase in the risk of developing cancers such as breast, colon, endometrium, kidney, and others. This is largely due to the fact that excess body fat can trigger chronic inflammation, disrupt hormone levels, and create an environment conducive to the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells," explained Endocrinologist and Metabolist Gisele Lorenzoni.
According to her, obesity not only increases the risk of contracting cancer but can also affect the effectiveness of existing treatments. Those with cancer who are overweight may make the healing process less effective, further complicating the clinical picture. "By focusing on prevention through maintaining a healthy weight, it is possible to significantly reduce the chances of developing cancer while also improving the effectiveness of treatments," the doctor emphasized.
