Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a growing number of men and women suffering from alopecia areata, which is the complete hair loss in a specific area of the scalp.
The issue affects the patient's self-esteem and can have various causes, such as emotional problems and immune system disorders. However, thanks to advances in research, it is now known that alopecia can be reversed when diagnosis and treatment are initiated at the first signs, as explained by aesthetic and dermatological nurse, trichology specialist, Elisângela Cozzer.
"It is a complex and delicate treatment that involves a multidisciplinary team – psychologist, nutritionist - when it is found that hair loss is related to stress issues, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and even autoimmune diseases. The diagnosis should be made by a trichology specialist, and the sooner we start treatment, the better the results."
She also emphasizes that one of the most common treatment options for alopecia areata is topical therapy, with specific medications to reduce inflammation and stimulate hair growth.
Depending on the case, special hair products will also be recommended, such as shampoos and lotions formulated to nourish the scalp and strengthen hair follicles, stimulating the growth of new strands.
"In more severe cases, additional treatments are recommended, such as low-intensity laser therapy or micro-needling therapy, which stimulate blood circulation in the scalp and promote hair growth," concludes the specialist.
