New for the skin: Repairing enzyme sunscreens

A powerful ally in the fight against photoaging and accumulated sun damage has just arrived in the beauty market. Repairing DNA enzyme sunscreens, such as those from the brand Isdin, are now available in the country and offer more than just protection: they promise to repair the damage already caused by sun exposure.

According to Dr. Renata Melo, this technology represents an important advancement in daily skin care. “We know that traditional sunscreen protects against future damage, but it does not correct what has already been done. These new enzyme sunscreens act exactly there: they help repair mutations in cellular DNA caused by the sun, reducing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging,” explains the doctor. These enzymes — such as photolyase — are activated by visible light and work during sun exposure, promoting a true “clean-up” of the DNA in damaged cells.

In any case, Renata reminds us that despite the innovation, using these products does not replace other forms of protection. “Just because the sunscreen has a repairing enzyme, we shouldn’t overdo sun exposure. It is a great reinforcement, but the basics still apply: reapplying sunscreen every two to three hours, wearing a hat, sunglasses, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, and keeping the skin hydrated are habits that make all the difference,” she warns.
