The drop in temperature is welcome to ease the heat and for lovers of warmer and tastier foods. But the cold also damages our skin due to the drier climate, and currently, in addition to dry skin and some common dermatitis of the season, some diseases have raised concerns.
In addition to Covid, which is already known to cause some changes in the skin and hair loss, monkeypox and chikungunya are diseases that need more attention and care.
According to dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), Irene Baldi, they directly affect the skin. “Monkeypox is a viral disease, which has among its main symptoms the appearance of blisters and sores on the skin, which can itch and hurt,” explains the dermatologist. In addition to the recent outbreak of the disease, it is considered much less lethal than regular smallpox and presents few risks to the patient.
Chikungunya – a disease caused by the dengue mosquito – can cause swelling, darkening of certain areas of the skin, the appearance of blisters or similar ulcers, and canker sores. “For the skin, we recommend an evaluation if the spots that appear persist, and we combine safe treatments for lightening,” says Irene. For topical use, we also recommend ointments and moisturizers aimed at treatment.
Covid-19 rarely presents consequences for our skin, but it has very distinct symptoms from person to person. “In some rare cases, it can cause swelling, itching, dry skin, spots, and inflammation, and we can also treat that,” she says. For the doctor, Covid has affected hair more, causing hair loss, and we treat patients who have had the disease for at least six months. The flu and colds, which are more common during this period, can also cause dryness in the skin, especially in the areas of the nose, mouth, and cheeks, which may suffer peeling due to the friction of tissues, paper, and even hands during the period of nasal congestion,” she emphasizes.
