New tax rule is expected to increase gasoline prices

With the start of June, the single Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS) of R$ 1.22 on gasoline will begin to be charged nationwide.

With this new rule, the price of fuel will be adjusted throughout Brazil and here in Espírito Santo as well.

Tax law specialist João Paulo Lyra, from the law firm Pagotto Rizzato e Lyra Sociedade de Advogados, explains that currently the tax rate is between 17% and 18% on the sale of the product, and now with this change the impact will be greater for consumers. "The rate will be unique and fixed per liter of gasoline," he says.

Thus, the adjustment will depend on each state and what will be passed on to the consumer will depend on each gas station.

"The intention of the last government - which approved the measure back in 2022 - with the tax change is to reduce tax evasion and the logistical cost of distribution," explains Lyra.

"If the current government does not create a new intervention, such as the end of the import parity price (PPI) implemented a few weeks ago, the price is expected to increase," points out the lawyer.
