More than 66% of Brazilians sleep poorly, according to a study conducted by the magazine Sleep Epidemiology. In this data, women are the ones who have the worst nights of sleep.
According to the sleep medicine specialist and president of the Brazilian Sleep Association (Regional ES), Jessica Polese, this is a factor that has been noticed for some time.
"The research found that women have 10% worse sleep than men. I dare say it is even greater, given the number of patients we attend to," explains the doctor. "Women have worse nights of sleep than men for various biological, social, and emotional reasons, such as having a triple workload, working outside, taking care of children, managing the household, and attending to their spouse," she emphasizes.
In addition, there is the hormonal aspect that significantly affects women. "Whether during the menstrual period, pregnancy, or menopause, women also suffer from these changes that can affect sleep," explains Jessica. "In this hormonal aspect, we can highlight body aches, mood swings, anxiety, increased body temperature, breast sensitivity; there are so many changes that only women experience, which can indeed cause sleep disorders," the doctor points out.
Jessica also warns about post-Covid or Chronic Covid. Symptoms range from psychoneurological issues to debilitating physical symptoms causing immense physical and mental suffering. "Complaints of anxiety, panic, and depressive symptoms are even worse in those who required hospitalization or experienced more severe cases," reports Jessica.
The data from this research were collected just a few days after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and involved the participation of 2,635 volunteers, all of whom were adults.
Good Night's Sleep
For a good night's sleep, Jessica recommends a routine before bedtime. "It is necessary to relax, keep the environment dimly lit, listen to music, drink tea, and keep cell phones, tablets, and TVs away at bedtime," she explains. Pharmacist Raigna Vasconcelos suggests the use of supplements to improve sleep. Among them is Sleep, made from melatonin, magnesium, passion fruit, vitamin B3, and B6, which are essential components for regulating sleep, and also Ultrabem, which, in addition to assisting with sleep, is indicated for overall well-being. "It helps the body produce hormones and substances that regulate sleep quality and contains nutrients that assist in the chemical reactions of our body," explains the pharmacist.
