The high temperatures that occurred in ES and now the sharp drop expected for this time of year have caused a lot of concern, especially because a new heat wave is predicted to arrive.
With the warmer temperatures now in winter, reaching 17 degrees in the capital and even a minimum of 7 in the countryside, it takes a toll on health to withstand the variations. According to pulmonologist Jessica Polese, what has drawn attention is that even in this season, the warmer days are experiencing very high temperatures, and dry weather prevails. “With the sudden change in temperature, there is a modification in the characteristics of airway secretions, which can trigger pre-existing allergies,” she says.
On colder days, the incidence of respiratory diseases increases due to the drier climate, and temperature drops reduce air humidity, which favors the spread of respiratory infections, especially due to the concentration of pollutants in the air. The most common diseases during this period include flu, colds, bronchiolitis, sinusitis, throat inflammation, and pneumonia,” she explains. Jessica warns of the need for increased attention to hydration and a healthy diet to preserve immunity. “Proper hydration is essential to help keep the respiratory pathways moist,” she states.
With the frequent spread of viral infections due to temperature variations – one day cold, another warm – or even the same variations in a single day, it is common for them to evolve into bacterial infections, increasing the severity of symptoms,” she says.
