Campaign encourages local consumption
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and with the total closure of commerce for almost two months, the capixaba clothing sector suffered significant impacts on sales. According to a survey conducted by Premium Public Opinion with 50 local companies in May, 96% experienced a decrease in sales, with 20% reporting zero sales, and another 54% having a reduction of 61% or more in sales. Among layoffs, 60% of companies have already done so.
In light of this scenario, the Chamber of Clothing created a campaign to encourage local brands and consumers to value capixaba clothing: “Capixaba Fashion: I support. I buy. I wear.”
The textile industry has always been representative in the capixaba economy. The Chamber of Clothing of Findes brings together six business unions from the State of Espírito Santo, representing 1,000 companies that directly and indirectly employ around 30,000 professionals, impacting more than one hundred thousand capixabas.
“The clothing sector encompasses the entire State, and with this campaign, we want to implement a set of actions that enhance the creative fashion industry, involving not only retailers but an entire production chain, from seamstresses, designers, printing, design, to salespeople, offering more social inclusion,” says the President of the Chamber of Clothing, José Carlos Bergamin.
The movement aims to reach 200 stores that will be branded with the campaign's logo, which features the colors of the Espírito Santo flag, in addition to shirts that will be distributed to retailers to encourage the consumption of products from the capixaba industry. “We need to raise consumer awareness about the importance of not only being fashionable but also supporting a production chain that involves thousands of people working in the sector,” explains Bergamin.
Furthermore, according to the survey, the expected revenue for the 2nd quarter and the first half of 2020, compared to 2019, is projected to decrease for 92% and 90%, respectively. The reduction in the 2nd half will be greater than or equal to 61% for 83.7% of companies. “This expectation aligns with the closure of companies in the sector, as 64.6% believe that at least 21% of companies will close,” he points out.
Thus, the campaign “Capixaba Fashion. I support. I buy. I wear” has no set end date. “The idea is for the action to last throughout the year, with themes for commemorative dates such as Valentine's Day, which is already very close, Father's Day, Children's Day, and up to Christmas, increasingly assisting the sector that has seen a drastic reduction due to the pandemic,” adds the president of the Chamber of Clothing.
