The search for plastic surgeries is a recurring topic, especially during this autumn-winter period when it is suitable to plan for the desired surgery. According to a survey conducted by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), among those who undergo these procedures are young people, who performed nearly 1.5 million aesthetic procedures in 2016. It is no wonder that Brazil stands out in this subject. Among the procedures performed, silicone implants are at the top of the list, and it is common for doubts to arise about the surgery.
The member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) Dr. Humberto Pinto lists the myths and truths that accompany the topic.
1 - Myth - Silicone implants always leak or burst.Truth - They do not rupture; they withstand pressures much higher than excessive pressure, traction, and distension. However, if there is any rupture due to a perforation of the implant, the silicone is cohesive; it does not flow, it remains retained in the area where it was placed. The silicone is no longer in gel form as it used to be. Thus, it does not leak; it remains like a gelatin, in the same position, and does not rupture, and in case of any perforation, the silicone is cohesive; it does not flow.
2 - Myth - Silicone implants cause breast cancer.
Truth - There is no direct association between silicone implants and breast cancer. Silicone implants do not cause cancer, but it is important to monitor breast health and undergo regular examinations, regardless of the presence of implants.
3 - Myth - Silicone implants are permanent.
Truth - Although silicone implants are durable, they are not permanent. They may need to be replaced over time due to complications, such as capsular contracture (excessive scarring around the implant) or desired aesthetic changes.
4 - Myth - Silicone implants interfere with breastfeeding.
Truth - Most women with silicone implants are able to breastfeed normally. However, in some cases, the implants may cause difficulties in breastfeeding. It is important to discuss your breastfeeding intentions with your doctor before undergoing implant surgery.
5 - Myth - All silicone implants are the same.
Truth - There are different types of silicone implants available, such as smooth, textured, and polyurethane, which vary in shape, size, and projection. Each patient is evaluated to determine the type of implant most suitable for their needs.
Among the innovations, the doctor highlights smart implants, which have an internal marker that contains all the information about the implant, accessible by the doctor. "Through a digital reader, it is possible to access the shape of the implant, size, serial number, manufacturing date, and batch. This brings more safety to the patient," emphasizes the plastic surgeon.
