The Carnival in Vitória arrives this week, and from February 10 to 14, it will be the main topic across Brazil. During the extended holiday, many people indulge in the celebrations. We have gathered some medical tips to help you navigate these days while keeping your health in mind. Check it out below:

According to pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, Jessica Polese, a lost night of sleep is never fully recovered, and at events that extend over several days - like Carnival - it is essential to try to compensate for sleep, even during the day. After the festivities, it is crucial to prioritize a full night of sleep to restore energy. The doctor advises: "Eat properly, stay hydrated, and when trying to recover sleep, adopt a sleep hygiene routine before bed to ensure a perfect night. Avoid using electronics, try a relaxing tea, and aim for the recommended eight hours of sleep."

For those who will be drinking alcohol, endocrinologist and metabolism specialist Gisele Lorenzoni recommends simultaneously consuming coconut water, juice, or sports drinks. "Alcohol inhibits an important hormone in the body called ADH or antidiuretic hormone. As a result, there is excessive fluid loss, which can even trigger dehydration. It is necessary to compensate for this loss by maintaining hydration", the doctor advised.

According to dentist Marlei Bonella, it is important to pay attention to oral hygiene to avoid certain diseases that are highly transmitted during the festivities, one of which is the kissing disease: "The kissing disease, or infectious mononucleosis, is common during Carnival among young people, and symptoms can include sore throat, infections like canker sores, herpes, so in addition to rigorous oral hygiene, such as brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash, avoid sharing utensils like cups, cutlery, and personal items due to the transmission of the disease through saliva," warns the dentist. The biggest problem with the kissing disease is that it can be transmitted by an infected person without symptoms for up to a year after infection.

For Dr. Renata Melo, the tip for the festivities is to not forget sunscreen and skin hydration during these days. "At the blocos, I've seen many people with sunburn marks for forgetting to apply sunscreen on their bodies; some even remember their faces but forget the rest of their bodies," says the doctor. Arms, legs, chest, anything exposed needs sun protection. With the intensity of the stronger UV rays, even the heat can tan the skin significantly. Regarding hydration, I suggest drinking plenty of water. "Drink plenty of water, even if you are consuming alcohol, alternate, and keep an eye on not getting dehydrated," she emphasizes. And about makeup, the ideal is to remove it before sleeping, using a makeup remover and a moisturizing cream of your choice.

And there’s no way to talk about Carnival without mentioning colorful and sparkly makeup; however, it is crucial to take care of the skin before and after makeup. According to dermatologist Karina Mazzini, it is essential to prepare the skin properly before applying makeup, using products specific to your skin type, a good sunscreen, and avoiding excesses that may clog pores. "It is important to pay attention to the expiration dates of products, as expired items can cause pimples and allergies." The dermatologist also highlights the importance of using high-quality makeup products that are hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic to avoid allergic reactions and pore blockage. And when you return from the festivities, complete removal of makeup is essential to allow the skin to breathe and recover.
