With Yellow September - the month of awareness and suicide prevention - the concern about factors that directly impact mental health, among them, sleep, grows.
According to Sleep Medicine Specialist, Jessica Polese, sleepless nights can be directly associated with anxiety and depression.
"Sleep is not just a moment of rest; it is essential for emotional balance and proper brain function. When a person faces sleep disorders, there is a significant impact on the regulation of hormones linked to mood and well-being, which can increase the risk of serious emotional problems," emphasizes the doctor.
Sleep is an important factor for memory and learning, as one of its functions is the regulation of hormone levels, such as serotonin and melatonin, which are essential for mood and sleep regulation. Another role of sleep is to reorganize and process the information acquired during the day, allowing for better retention and access to information in the future. "It is during sleep that important mechanisms responsible for maintaining health occur, as if the body prepares for the day. If this stage is compromised, the mind becomes more vulnerable to negative thoughts and psychological exhaustion.
Often, emotional issues and conditions directly reflect on sleep and vice versa, creating a repeating cycle. "We must address and treat sleep quality because of the symptoms that can range from psychoneurological issues to debilitating physical symptoms causing physical and mental suffering," points out Jessica.
