The Law 15.495/26 established September 6 as National Ox Cart Driver Day. The law was sanctioned by the President of the Republic and published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) this Friday (4).
In the past, the ox cart was used to transport people and goods and was important for the economic and social development of the country. Today, the tradition of ox cart drivers is part of cultural manifestations in different regions.
Origin of the Law
The law originated from Bill 1036/24, proposed by Congresswoman Flávia Morais (MDB-GO). She states that preserving these traditions is essential to keep alive the memory of rural Brazil and its contributions to national identity.
The congresswoman highlights that the Pilgrimage of Ox Carts at the Festa do Divino Pai Eterno in Trindade (GO) was recognized as Brazilian Cultural Heritage by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) in 2016. She also notes that in Olivença (AL), Gonçalves (MG), Raposo (RJ), and São João Sul (SC), there are also traditional ox cart parades that attract tourists and mobilize the local population.
