In June, a campaign draws attention to the prevention of burn accidents, 'Orange June'. Promoted by the Brazilian Society of Burns (SBQ), the month is chosen due to the National Day for the Fight Against Burns, which is close to June 6.

The focus of this year's campaign is the use of gel alcohol, which has caused various burn accidents, both in personal and professional use, and even in car accidents. According to plastic surgeon Humberto Pinto, in addition to the importance of prevention regarding gel alcohol – which has indeed significantly increased burn cases – it is necessary to remember another factor, the rise of 'cooks'. "Due to confinement, many have started cooking more, either for pleasure or necessity (to have an extra income), and the number of burn cases from domestic accidents has increased considerably," highlights the surgeon.

Among burns, we have first, second, and third-degree burns. "First-degree burns are the most superficial, while third-degree burns are the most severe, affecting the skin, epidermis, as well as muscles and potentially reaching the bones," emphasizes Humberto. "In milder cases, it is ideal to clean the area with running water and seek a health clinic or emergency room immediately. In the case of more severe burns, a specialized medical team will perform the correct procedures, and depending on the case, the patient may need to be hospitalized," explains the doctor.

Over time, the need for plastic surgery is evaluated depending on the severity and sequelae of the burn.
