Violent communication, also known as verbal aggression, is a way of expressing oneself that involves the use of aggressive, offensive, and disrespectful words and behaviors. This type of communication not only harms relationships between people but can also have significant emotional and psychological consequences. According to Eryka Roberts, a mentor for women and relationship expert, verbal aggression occurs when someone uses insults, threats, humiliations, or any other type of derogatory language to hurt, intimidate, or control another person. It can happen both in personal contexts, such as romantic or family relationships, and in professional settings, such as the workplace. "It is important to emphasize that violent communication is not a healthy or effective way to express oneself. On the contrary, it generates a cycle of negativity, fueling conflicts, increasing stress, and undermining mutual trust. Furthermore, people who are constantly exposed to this type of communication may suffer emotional damage, low self-esteem, and mental health issues, diminishing their personal power and ability to form new relationships," she emphasizes. To avoid verbal aggression, she states that it is essential to develop assertive communication skills, which involve expressing thoughts and feelings clearly, directly, and respectfully, without attacking or devaluing the other. "Developing assertive and respectful communication is essential for maintaining positive, constructive, and harmonious relationships. Those who live on crumbs are like pigeons. Our mental health can only be protected by us. We must set boundaries, and this can be trained," advises Roberts. Want to know more about Eryka's work? Visit Instagram @erykarobertsterapia
