In simpler terms, Lipedema is a progressive disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat in specific areas of the body, such as the legs, arms, knees, hips, and thighs. It primarily develops in women during a time of hormonal imbalance, such as menopause, pregnancy, etc.
According to pharmacist Raigna Vasconcelos, the disease can be confused with obesity; however, in lipedema, the excess fat does not distribute throughout the entire body. "This can be noticed when, even with diets and exercise, the person does not reduce fat in the area, creating a disproportion," highlights the entrepreneur.
To treat this disease, changes in diet, exercise, the use of compression stockings, medications, supplementation, and lymphatic drainage are necessary. "It is important to pay attention to changes in the body, as up to five million people may be living with lipedema and do not know it," says Raigna. Lipedema causes discomfort, and there are already ways to alleviate and control the disease, making your lifestyle easier.
