With the rise in cases of dengue and chikungunya in the state, there are many complaints regarding the symptoms and sequelae caused by these diseases. According to dentist and periodontist Dr. Marlei Bonella, it is important to pay attention to symptoms such as lip swelling, redness, gum bleeding, mucositis, and canker sores. “Oral lesions are always quite bothersome due to burning, pain, difficulty in drinking water, and during chewing.
Dengue can cause disturbances in blood coagulation, leading to bleeding in the gums that may or may not be related to bacterial plaque. Therefore, seek a detailed evaluation with a periodontist.
The appearance of canker sores has been happening due to low immunity. “It is common for canker sores and mouth irritations to appear when immunity drops and when the patient is taking certain medications,” says Marlei.
“Gum inflammation can progress to periodontal disease - which is a more severe inflammation with the accumulation of purulent secretion that leads to bone loss and subsequently, tooth loss. Thus, all care is recommended, especially since it is through the mouth that the foods that will provide nutrients for the patient's recovery will be digested,” points out Marlei.
