This represents 20% of the total plastic surgeries in the country, which is nearly 1.5 million. Just over a decade ago, this proportion was 3%.
Vanity, interest in younger partners, competition in the job market. These are some factors that have led Brazilian men to plastic surgery clinics. And the interest has been growing. According to the latest data from the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Isaps), about 300,000 procedures were performed on men in Brazil in 2019. This represents 20% of the total plastic surgeries in the country, which is nearly 1.5 million. In Espírito Santo, this number was 8,100 men.
According to plastic surgeon Ariosto Santos, who is the president of the SBCP regional in Espírito Santo, just over a decade ago, this proportion was 3%, which means that today men are undergoing 650% more plastic surgeries, not counting non-surgical aesthetic procedures.
"The job market today is very competitive, and men also want to impress, so many have sought plastic surgery in search of a stronger image in the corporate world. Others also want to improve their appearance to attract the desired woman or seek younger partners. They are becoming increasingly vain, taking more care of themselves," reports the surgeon.
Brazilians are even more vain than the global average. Isaps data shows that in 2019, 13.5% of plastic surgeries worldwide were performed on men. Santos reveals that one of the most sought-after procedures by them is gynecomastia, breast reduction. The performance of this procedure has been driven by two factors: obesity and the use of anabolic steroids.
