Released this Thursday (29), the Infogripe Bulletin from Fiocruz shows a national epidemiological scenario indicating a continued decline in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), however, the main exception is influenza A, which has driven an increase in the number of SARS cases in some states in the North.
The so-called "flu K" — a genetic variant of the Influenza A (H3N2) virus — has drawn the attention of health authorities globally and also in Brazil. This variant has already been identified in samples in the country and occurs in more than 30 countries, being associated with a more intense circulation of the virus, although, so far, there is no evidence of greater clinical severity compared to other strains of the flu.
According to pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist, Jessica Polese, flu K is part of the natural evolution of the influenza virus and, although it is not a new virus, it can spread more rapidly in a population with low vaccination coverage. Therefore, it is essential that people are up to date with their vaccinations — especially during this period when we receive many tourists in the summer and with the approach of Carnival, where the circulation of people and crowds increases,” the doctor explains.
“The flu vaccine remains the main prevention tool. It may not prevent 100% of infections, especially if there are genetic variations of the virus, but it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death,” she points out.
In addition, it is necessary to stay alert because the Covid virus is still circulating among us, and preventive measures should continue: frequent hand hygiene, wearing masks if infected, avoiding closed environments, and if feeling very ill, it is ideal to stay home; and avoiding crowds.
