The rains returned today, and the forecast is for next week to be quite rainy as well. Many regions of Espírito Santo are going through a delicate moment due to the heavy rains. In addition to the flooding of streets and houses, which have already left more than 2000 people homeless, and the breaking of roads, it is very important for people to be aware of the elevated risk of contamination.
The rain and floods can transmit diseases such as mycosis, hepatitis, and leptospirosis. The means of transmission of these pathologies can spread more easily under these conditions. Mycosis is a skin disease caused by fungi and can appear after periods of rain due to humidity; some types of hepatitis can be transmitted during the rainy season, especially the Hepatitis A virus. Leptospirosis is caused by the Leptospira bacteria, which can be found in the feces and urine of contaminated animals, mainly rats. Another issue that can be a problem is Dengue. The proliferation of the mosquito increases significantly during these periods, and to protect oneself, it is recommended to use repellent and never leave standing water to avoid the proliferation of the mosquito.
The coordinator of São Francisco Hospital - Rede Meridional, Rogério Santorio Filho, explains that “in extreme cases, when it is necessary to come into contact with this type of water, which may be contaminated, it is recommended to wear waterproof plastic boots or, in the absence of boots, cover hands and feet with 2 or 3 plastic bags, one on top of the other, and secure them with adhesive tape. It is also essential to carry out a complete cleaning of the houses and recovered objects.
“In case of discomfort or any symptoms such as fever or pain during these periods of heavy rain and flooding, the recommendation is to seek the nearest medical care facility,” says the clinician.
