Engaging in physical activities is recommended as a benefit to overall health. However, there are specific movements that contribute to the prevention of certain types of diseases, such as thrombosis, which arises from the formation of blood clots, primarily in the leg region. There are several factors responsible for this, and poor circulation is one of them.
To aid in this prevention, vascular surgeon and angiologist Moriane Lorenzoni has outlined two activity recommendations that can be done at home. “Let’s start by working on the calf, standing on the tips of your toes and then returning to the starting position several times. It is possible to perform this same movement on the edge of a step or sidewalk and lift your feet off the ground when lowering them. However, this option will require more strength,” she advises.
Next, it’s time to move the ankle. “Simply lift your feet and use them to draw circles in the air with your toes. Then, rotate one foot for 30 seconds and switch positions. Finally, repeat the movement with the other foot,” she indicates.
According to the doctor, exercises are allies in prevention, helping to reduce risks. “It is important for the patient to follow up with a specialist, as this measure cannot be recommended for everyone. Although it is a problem that generally affects more women – due to greater exposure to risk factors such as contraceptives and pregnancies – there are also cases in men,” she emphasizes.
If thrombosis is not treated correctly and promptly, it can lead to complications. Depending on the affected vein segment, it can be more or less severe. When the clot obstructs a small vein in the leg, it causes a localized disturbance in that area. However, the closer it is to the heart, or the larger the vein, the more severe the thrombosis will be, as well as the possibility of leading the patient to death.
