>> The subject is still taboo and is associated with aging

Recently, the 1st Essity Study on Menopause and its Stages - 2022 was released. 2,000 Brazilian women were interviewed, and it pointed out that 329 of the respondents associate the arrival of menopause with old age, and more than half (52%) do not like to discuss the topic.

The subject is still taboo for many women. Most prefer to hide that they are going through this phase. Even famous women like Luana Piovani and Angélica have commented on the topic and the challenges they faced when reaching this moment, the complete cessation of menstruation.

Luana Piovani, 46, said she felt ashamed and did not talk about the subject with her partner. The presenter Angélica, 48, mentioned that she entered the period earlier, known as early menopause, at the age of 43.

Gynecologist Lorena Baldotto stated that menopause is only considered when a woman completely stops menstruating for a year. She said that this usually occurs between the ages of 48 and 50 and marks the end of the reproductive period, meaning that from then on, she concludes her fertile period and no longer has the natural possibility of becoming a mother.

"Menopause is different from climacteric, although many people confuse the periods. The climacteric is a process that has several phases: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. Some women may experience hot flashes, accompanied by sweating, dizziness, and palpitations; night sweats affecting sleep; depression or irritability; changes in sexual organs, such as itching, dryness of the vaginal mucosa; menstrual disorders; decreased libido, among others," she said.

Lorena also emphasized that menopause comes with a host of symptoms that worsen or anticipate the signs of aging.

"There are signs such as skin turgor (swelling), loss of elasticity and collagen that occur with hormonal drops, as well as irritability, vaginal dryness, lack of libido, and lack of energy."

According to the gynecologist, the most effective treatment is hormone replacement therapy for those who are indicated.

Negative impact on sexual life

One of the impacts of menopause is on a woman's sexual life. For many women, during this phase, sexual desire drastically decreases due to a reduction in sexual hormones, which can negatively impact sexual response, reducing libido.

"It is worth remembering that psychological factors, use of medications, presence of comorbidities, and the quality of the relationship with the partner can impact this woman's sexual function."

Hormone replacement therapy greatly helps with libido. "One important thing to consider is that some women have never had a high libido and expect the medication to work miracles. Besides having hormonal levels in check, it is necessary to be in good health," she said.
