Natural black diamonds obtain their color through large amounts or clouds of tiny mineral inclusions, such as graphite, pyrite, and other minerals, that extend throughout the stone. These diamonds may also have numerous cleavages or fractures that are stained black or have turned black due to graphitization. The greater the concentration of inclusions, the darker the diamond.
The color of a black diamond can vary subtly within a spectrum that goes slightly beyond black. According to jewelry designer Ane Zorzanelli, a natural and untreated black diamond can exhibit a color variation ranging from an almost translucent gray to olive green or dark brown.
