This Tuesday (21) was National Asthma Control Day. The date involves thousands of people suffering from the chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, which has symptoms such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, and wheezing.
The cause of the disease can be genetic, with a family history of respiratory allergies, or environmental, affecting people who are already sensitive to everyday agents such as weather, dust, substances, and even medications.
According to pulmonologist Jessica Polese, the date chosen at the beginning of winter is precisely to alert asthmatics to the period when respiratory disease cases increase due to the cold and dry weather.
"In untreated asthma, extremely severe crises can occur, even leading to death. This is unacceptable considering that it is a treatable disease with widely studied and safe medications. In other cases, asthma can lead to bacterial infection, requiring the use of antibiotics," she says.
To treat asthma, in addition to medications, some basic care in daily routines is necessary, such as keeping the environment clean and well-ventilated; maintaining daily cleaning with attention to avoid anything that accumulates a lot of dust or serves as a deposit, avoiding pets at home, etc.
"During this winter period, it is important to be more attentive, as sudden temperature changes and the proliferation of dust mites are the main causes of asthma and respiratory allergies," Jessica states. Always consult your doctor and seek appropriate treatment.
