World Tuberculosis Day 2024 is being celebrated with the theme "Yes, we can end tuberculosis!", conveying a message of hope that it is possible to get back on track against the tuberculosis epidemic through high-level leadership, increased investments, and faster adoption of the new recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), according to PAHO.

On the upcoming 24th, World Tuberculosis Day is celebrated. This day serves as a reminder that tuberculosis remains a significant threat to global health, with an alarming increase in cases and deaths related to the disease. According to WHO, there are 1.3 million deaths each year and it affects millions more, with enormous impacts on families and communities.

According to pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist, Jessica Polese, to protect against tuberculosis and reduce the risk of severe complications, it is essential to adopt preventive measures and be alert for symptoms such as: "Persistent cough, high fever, loss of appetite, chest pain, fatigue, and weakness," she says.

The doctor emphasizes that among the preventive measures, vaccination is a way to prevent it. "The BCG vaccine is a valuable tool in preventing tuberculosis, and usually, individuals are vaccinated as soon as they are born, but when necessary, adults can also receive it, especially those with low immunity or comorbidities," explains Jessica. Additionally, early diagnosis can save lives.
