According to Fiocruz, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated on February 11, was established in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and became part of the Foundation's event calendar in 2019. Under the leadership of UNESCO and UN Women, the event takes place in various countries, with activities aimed at highlighting the role and fundamental contributions of women in the fields of scientific and technological research.
For pulmonologist, sleep medicine specialist, professor, and researcher Dr. Jessica Polese, the date should be celebrated by all who are part of the scientific community. "The importance of emphasizing gender equality in this area is necessary due to the inequality that still occurs in the field," says the doctor.
The celebration of the date aims to give visibility to the fundamental contributions of women in the fields of scientific and technological research. "On this day, I feel even prouder to be a woman, a doctor, and to contribute to the science of our society, especially in the current pandemic moment we are experiencing," highlights Jessica.
