Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common in Brazil and accounts for about 30% of all malignant tumors registered in the country, according to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA).
In Orange December - the month of awareness about the disease - the focus is on prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment.
But what is the role of the plastic surgeon in treatment? According to plastic surgeon Humberto Pinto, the professional's role goes beyond aesthetics. "We remove lesions caused by skin cancer. The most common procedure is excision – which is the removal of lesions for analysis with a pathologist – which is essential for diagnosis and treatment," he explains.
Humberto emphasizes that depending on the extent of the lesion, if reconstruction of the affected area is necessary, it is possible to perform the procedure aesthetically. "The main thing is prevention," warns the doctor.
