June has arrived, and it brings to mind festivities, fun, and treats like pé-de-moleque, candy apples, canjica, cocada, boiled corn, and pamonha.
The typical delights of June festivals are irresistible, but they can also pose a real challenge to oral health. The dentist, Implantologist, and Clinical Director of IOS – Instituto Odontológico, Dr. Marlei Bonella, issues a warning: excessive consumption of these treats can cause cavities, sensitivity, and even dental fractures.
“June foods are part of our culture and don’t need to be avoided, but it is essential to practice moderation and maintain oral hygiene, especially after consuming them to prevent the proliferation of bacteria,” she explains.
According to Marlei, paçoca, pé-de-moleque, and candy apples are the most concerning foods due to their high sugar content. “Additionally, pé-de-moleque can lead to more serious situations, such as a dental fracture if not handled carefully,” she points out.
To enjoy the festivities without harming oral health, the dentist recommends: Brush your teeth right after meals; use dental floss daily, drink water frequently to help clean the mouth naturally, avoid excessive consumption of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, and of course, visit your dentist regularly.
