The pursuit of beauty standards imposed by today's society has had an impact on plastic surgery clinics
According to plastic surgeon Humberto Pinto, surgeries have been increasingly on the rise due to access to information on the internet and social media. “They promote knowledge and groups exchange information in search of procedures,” says the surgeon. “Moreover, surgeries are more accessible, leading to an increase in demand,” he adds.
The doctor points out that today any imperfection is bothersome, and the addiction to filters and perfect selfies creates a set of interests in undergoing plastic surgery. “They try to mitigate the effects of aging or some anatomical characteristic they have had since birth, like the nose, some localized fat, and to look more beautiful according to a social standard in order to improve socially and professionally,” the doctor states.
According to the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP), 15% of people seeking plastic surgery suffer from dysmorphic disorder. “Dysmorphic disorder is a psychological condition characterized by an uncontrollable concern about appearance,” explains Humberto.
Thus, it is very important that we have ethical sensitivity to truly analyze whether the procedure is necessary. “I talk a lot with each patient to really be sure if the reason for the surgery is a priority; we identify issues related to health and psychology,” the doctor explains. “We know when the patient is truly certain, when what bothers them is physical, or when it is even related to a health issue, and we stay alert,” he concludes.
