The demand for breast reduction surgery has increased among teenagers in Brazil. According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), over 95,000 procedures were performed in the country in 2023, representing a 9% increase compared to 2019. This phenomenon reflects a trend already observed in the United States, where the number increased by 64% during the same period, with over 76,000 surgeries performed in the last year.
According to plastic surgeon Dr. Humberto Pinto, this increase has also been noticed in his clinic, especially among girls aged 15 to 17. “In recent years, we have seen a significant rise in the demand for breast reduction among teenagers and breast explant among women. Many of them come accompanied by their parents, reporting back pain, difficulties in practicing sports, and self-esteem issues caused by the size of their breasts,” he explains.
The excessive weight of the breasts can cause back pain, shoulder marks due to bra use, and even postural difficulties. Additionally, psychological issues such as insecurity and low self-esteem are frequently mentioned.
“The decision to undergo plastic surgery in teenagers needs to be carefully evaluated. It is essential to analyze the patient's physical development, check if the complaints are persistent, and understand the impact of this condition on their daily life,” emphasizes the surgeon. He highlights that medical guidance and proper follow-up are crucial to ensure satisfactory results and safety in the procedure. “The most important thing is that the patient is well-informed about the procedure so that they can make a conscious and safe decision,” concludes the doctor.
