>> They can bring serious harm to our eyes and even loss of vision if not treated early.

We know that there are some diseases that do not send clear signals that they are present, settling in our bodies, and by the time we identify them, we are already facing serious and often irreversible problems. This also happens with our eyes, and the risk can be losing vision. For this reason, we spoke with Dr. Klícia Molina from the Hospital de Olhos de Vitória, and she alerted us about three silent diseases that can bring serious harm.

Cone Keratoconus is a corneal disease that is among the main causes of loss of visual quality in children, adolescents, and young adults. This disease, although bilateral, meaning it occurs in both eyes, is asymmetrical, which means it worsens more in one eye than the other.

"The fact that it affects the eyes differently means that the person, seeing well thanks to the less affected eye, takes longer to notice the changes in vision, and by the time they do, the disease is already quite advanced and vision is seriously compromised. It is a progressive disease that, by affecting such young people, generates anxiety about the future, depression, and insecurities during a phase that is already so delicate in life. It causes difficulties in school, in college, and many patients struggle to maintain jobs due to the visual difficulties it causes," said Klícia.

The treatment for Keratoconus must be done for life, and ophthalmological follow-up is also necessary. Visits to the doctor will vary according to the needs of each case.

Another silent disease that is the main cause of irreversible blindness in Brazil and around the world is Glaucoma, which is a slow and progressive disease.

The doctor said that this disease causes the person’s vision to become increasingly tunnel-like, as if seeing through a tube, but there are also cases of loss of central vision. It is only at this moment that the person usually notices, and unfortunately, the amount of vision that has been lost can no longer be recovered. This also generates anxiety and depression, irreversible loss of work capabilities, and also requires lifelong treatment.

The third silent disease raised by the doctor from the Hospital de Olhos de Vitória was peripheral retinal lesions. These usually affect people who have high prescriptions in their glasses. If identified and treated in time, they do not cause any more serious problems, but if not identified, they can lead to retinal detachment and severe and sometimes irreversible visual loss as well.

All these diseases have no symptoms in the early stages and lead to vision loss if not treated in time. To identify them, it is important to have annual routine check-ups; it is at this moment that they can be identified, and the ophthalmologist will perform complementary exams to finalize the diagnosis and already indicate the best treatments, preventing vision loss and all the other issues that come along with the problem.
