After actress Larissa Manoela announced on her social media that in addition to endometriosis, she also discovered she has polycystic ovary syndrome, many women questioned what the symptoms are, etc.
A very common hormonal disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome can occur in women between 30 and 40 years old. According to endocrinologist Gisele Lorenzoni, "the specific cause of the syndrome is still unknown, but women who are diagnosed may have hormonal changes such as excess insulin production in the pancreas and alterations in the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal glands," explains the doctor.
For diagnosis, women need to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound, in addition to laboratory tests. Some symptoms include irregular menstrual cycles, acne on the skin, excessive facial hair, and even obesity and infertility. As there is no cure, symptoms need to be managed to avoid further health issues, and obesity is a warning sign. According to the endocrinologist, this management is necessary to prevent the risk of developing another chronic disease. "We need to focus on this potential weight gain and treat it, including medications to prevent diabetes and high cholesterol," explains the endocrinologist.
Gisele also recommends engaging in physical exercise. "At least 30 minutes of activity five days a week will help with the diet, in addition to being beneficial for health in every way," she says.
