Eating at home is among the factors that motivated the rise in rice prices. Economist Cecília Perini explains that this behavior triggered higher demand for basic items in the food basket, raising costs. In addition to preparing their own meals, a habit intensified during the period of social isolation, it is also supported by a survey from Mobills - a personal finance management startup - which showed a 94.67% increase in orders made through food delivery apps.
“The pandemic context favors the increase in prices as people are having their meals at home. The payment of emergency aid also encourages greater food consumption. Food prices do not change solely due to production costs and crop failures. There are several macroeconomic factors that interfere with fluctuations,” added the economist.
According to her, the appreciation of the dollar against the real also plays a role in the higher price of rice. “With the real devalued, there is a strong tendency for producers to be more interested in exporting, reducing domestic supply,” she explained.
